& beautify your bicycle
Hardware requirements (see list, right sidebar) will vary, depending on your bike. Fortunately, Honjo offer enough fasteners to thrill a phalange of fitting freaks.
Here we are mounting the fenders to a Rivendell Bleriot, with Tektro R-556 (long-reach) caliper brakes.
Rear Fender/Mudguard
1. Begin by marking and drilling a hole in the rear fender where you want it to attach to the chainstay bridge. Typically, this should position the end 50mm below the bridge, protecting the bottom bracket from spray.
2. Slide on the bridgeband, making sure it will end up positioned behind the brake bridge. Tape fender to the seatstay bridge, lining up the tapped hole in the chainstay bridge with the hole you’ve drilled in the fender. Bolt fender to chainstay bridge (using leather washer between fender and bridge and rubber washer on underside of the fender).
3. Re-attach rear brake, sandwiching bridgeband tab between washer and brake caliper. Crimp the bridgeband firmly with pliers.
4. Now, secure U-stay loosely to rear dropout eyelets (using 5R clips) with 2 X 5mm darumas in place. Position them so stays are parallel with chain stays. Mark fender with fine point felt pen.
5. Punch and drill fender. Attach stay with darumas.
Divisions on “hammered” versions provide a precise guide for lining up holes.
6. Remember to use leather washers between darumas and mudguard.
7. Finally, tighten bolts on 5R clips at dropout eyelets and adjust fender line. Aim for even spacing between fender edge and tire. Trim stays to size with hacksaw or bolt cutter. Round edges with file.
Front Mudguard/Fender
1. Suspend crown daruma from front brake bolt (unless your frame has an integrated fork crown boss brazed under the crown). Position mudguard, making sure there is enough forward coverage and — if a front rack is planned — that it extends far enough forward to clear the rack. Ground clearance should be approximately 50mm.
2. Carefully, mark and drill where daruma bolt will attach. You will need to bend the fender to sit flat under the crown. Use a rubber mallet judiciously.
3. Trim a reinforced rubber plumbing washer to fit under the steel washer on the fork crown daruma. Bolt on fender.
4. Drill holes and insert screws for obligatory front leather mudflap.
5. Treat mudflap with leather preservative
6. Bolt on mudflap and you’re ready for the monsoons.
