Victoria International Cycling Festival roundup

It’s been a busy week or so, filled with photo editing pictures from recent Victoria International Cycling Festival events. Oh, and a certain hockey series has disrupted my habit of evening work.

The opening Harbour Sprints (reprised a week later) were entertaining and Ryder Hesjedal’s Tour de Victoria was a resounding success on the 28th (except for a few motorists angered by road closures. More on that in a future post).

The top-notch Robert W. Cameron Law Cycling Series joined the festival, including time trials and the Bastion Square Grand Prix, on the 29th. This exiting event brought out the best racers to challenge nerves and skills on the criterium course through downtown Victoria streets and along the Inner Harbour. Last year, I shot stills of the men’s and women’s elite race and video of the men’s event. This year I concentrated on stills with my Nikon D-7000. Maybe next year I’ll shoot just video.

Last weekend it was the turn of budding cyclists. On Belleville Street—closed for the occasion—and the lawn of the Legislature, the Family Bike Festival engaged tricycling tikes and unicycle geeks, the latter providing entertainment for all ages. Across the street, in front of the Empress Hotel, the Classic Bike Rally brought together vintage bikes from around the community.

The Festival continues through this weekend with the Jump Ship—a dirt jumping contest on a barge in the harbour—bicycle polo and the Peddling Art show (running through the end of June). For a full list of events, check out the Victoria International Cycling Festival website.

Last but not least (though not strictly part of VICF), this weekend reprises the Victoria  World Naked Bike Ride. I hope to again uncover it’s secrets, as I did last year.

The photos here are some of my favourites (with a bias towards people I know or have been tagged in my complete Facebook event galleries. If you are or know any of the riders/racers, please tag them in Facebook galleries … and while you’re there, feel free to “like” VeloWeb’s FB page.

Did you attend/participate in any of the events? Will you check out any upcoming events? What was your favourite and will you return next year?

Ray, did you see the results of the timed hill climb up Munn’s Road? It looked like Ryder averaged 28.7kmh up there! Yikes.
