American marching bands love Queen Victoria

Leonard Cohen loves Queen Victoria, Victorians love Queen Victoria and marching bands from Bellingham, Washington love Queen Victoria. At least they turn out in droves to celebrate her birthday every year in her namesake capital of British Columbia.

Though we’ve been watching news reports of soggy campsites on this first long-weekend of the year, the weather cooperated for the parade. This year, upwards of 55,000 gathered to see the festivities. The parade consisted of 142 entries: from marching bands, heard practising around the city for the last few days, to floats, clowns and more than a few bicycles.

Happy Victoria day, one and all!

For the most part, Ontarian’s view the Victoria Day long weekend as two things….

1. Unofficial start to summer where you open and clean out the cottage.
2. “May two-four” as in a 24 case of beer…Meaning just another long weekend for those to get drunk.

Few cities will have fireworks, but that’s about it.

Yes, I remember the Ontario version (lived in Toronto for a while).

The cottage often needed another clean-up after the May two-four!
