Note video is 720p HD
I recently read a blogging newsletter article challenging bloggers to become “vloggers.” The idea terrified me.
As regular visitors will know, VeloWeb has videos in a few of the VeloGarage tutorials and I’ve included a few in posts—my own and others I feel are noteworthy—but nothing quite as personal as this.
I thoroughly enjoy making videos, though doing so is a time vortex and I possess only limited editing skills.
Mostly with this one, however, I want to make a more “intimate” connection with my readers/viewers here and talk a little about what I want to do next.
That will include more video tutorials and articles on the main topics. I also plan to update some of the VeloWeb sections.
As I mention in the video, I asked for feedback in a poll last year and took from the results that the eclectic categories here at VeloWebLog had a bit of something for a variety of readers and I’m continually pleased with feedback in comments. Please keep those coming and let me know what you think of this idea and anything else you’d like to see me cover.
I’m not sure I want to try video… I’ve been thinking about it but I don’t know that my readers would care. I’ve more than doubled my readership in the past month but it’s still, you know, not much.
I feel like videos should have a point, and I don’t really have one for the moment…
Anabelle, I think it can be a good thing … if what you’re offering is good.
As mentioned, video has been very successful in the VeloGarage section, however … this “talking head” video seems to have been a total flop, so I’m not likely to repeat the experiment (perhaps my brand of humour is better expressed in writing).
VeloWeb averages 6,500 unique visitors a month and rising, so better not scare people off with more of my mug! 🙂
In your videos you should speak with a British accent. People love British accents and colourful British colloquialisms and lots of swearing. My favorite video presenters are Kai Wong and Lok Cheung of the DigitalRev Photo Shop in Hong Kong.
Act like them and substitute bikes for cameras and people will flock to your videos. I think they shoot all their videos with a 5D. I know that video editing can be a real time-hooverer but once you edit a few of the same type of videos it will become less time-consuming (probably).
People generally won’t watch videos unless there is something in the video that cannot be expressed in words and still pictures. Most people surf the net at work so they can’t be seen watching VeloWebTV , especially with the sound on. They may watch it at home if they know you are speaking with a British accent and you are going to do something funny and/or dangerous with a bicycle or if you are going to fly into an angry tirade, preferably with colourful British colloquialisms.
Yes, now I regret having worked hard to lose my British accent, although it was of the coarse variety no one could understand … though it did attract unwanted attention.
I also like Kai Wong and Lok Cheung, as well as their models. I used the Nikon D7000 for this video, which received complimentary reviews from Kai and compared favourably to the Canon 7D.
No, I think that in order to popularize my videos, I need import cars and attractive models.
Ray, I like it. But that could be cuz we seem to share a sense of humour. I think video could be great to talk about / demo bike stuff (rides, parts, etc).
One suggestion if I may. Shoot for about 2-3 minutes in length. Get to the point and be done with it. People have short attention spans. Can you teach me how to use iMovie…
Thanks for the input, Chris. Yes, I must work on my verbiage problem.
That issue could be moderated in editing, but then I might end up with the kind of work I lampooned at the beginning of this video. So it’s really a problem of coherent speaking.
I actually have thought about doing a video on re-learning “slow” contemplation. We have been re-wired by staccato music video viewing.
This morning I tried to watch a video/slideshow on a world bicycle tour. It hurt my eyes. There has to be a happy medium.
I’m no iMovie expert, but I’d be happy to share what I’ve picked up.
